Techniques "End of Row Cast On"

There will be times when you need to add stitches to a row.  Sometimes that comes at the end of a row, perhaps to create a sleeve.  Sometimes you need to add stitches mid row, when you are creating buttonholes, adding underarm stitches to a body worked top down or perhaps you are knitting hand warners or socks.  I prefer a knitted cast on, this method is more stable and gives a first row to the portion you are creating.

I know I do this every New year...start out blogging, review what I knit/crocheted in the prior year and set out to commit myself to blog on a regular basis.  Based on my posts in the past, somehow the blogging stops.

Challenge Accepted-Double Knitting

It seems as if it took me 3 years to finally feel comfortable with Brioche knitting.   I took numerous classes both live and online (mybluprint.com) from the most knowledgable people in the field.  I repeated the classes, created multiple practice projects and read every book Nancy Marchant wrote.  Brioched in single color, two color, flat and in the round.  It finally sunk in....the most difficult thing in knitting for me....ever.   I must admit that I'm not at 100% and probably never will be, but I challenged myself and feel great about the result.

This year the challenge is Double Knitting...I've taken a few classes, but never created a project.  This year in February I'll be traveling on a Craft Cruise to Australia and New Zealand with Lucy Neatby as our instructor.    Although there is no double knitting class aboard ship, I know the motivation to learn more about double knit will be there.

Kate is a Crocheter (her plan is is learn how to knit this year), but after discovering Andrea Mowry designs she asked if I would knit a few for her.   Well of course, what an thrill to be able to knit her something she likes, and of course all color selections are under her guidance.   

Here's are the 5 sweaters I created.

My previous post, last August (Sorry about that...too much knitting to do) showed the beginning of the Throwback cardigan.  Since then I finished Kate's and a second for my Mentee Gaby 

(cascade 220).

My first AM creation----Wool and Honey, lots of yarn overs (wrapped stitches) give the long floats to create the design.   (Jan 1, 2019-Jan 24, 2019)

The most recent creation.   Shifty with Spincycle Dyed in the Wool yarns.   Super soft and I used a smaller needle to do the work.

Norway - Just WOW AND ANNEMOR SUNDBO

Kristiansand, Norway

We landed in Norway, so far north yet the weather was very hot.   This is one of the most beautiful places I've been to.   I really did not take as many photos as I should have because I was just so enchanted by everything around me and was soaking it all in.   Just sailing through the fjords to reach this beautiful spot was amazing.   The ship is docked across from the Opera House and within a few short steps you enter a small marina filled with boats, shops and restaurants.

Of course there was yarn shopping.  

The BEST TREAT OF ALL..... ANNEMOR SUNDBO

Annemor opened her studio to us and spoke of her passion for preserving the knitting history of Norway.   The mittens and gloves you see here are the remains of tossed away items that where shredded to make new yarn and woven into blankets, mattress pads etc.   Recycling dating back to the Second world war.    When she asked to apprentice with the owner of the mill, her said sure if she was willing to buy the mill.  Annemor purchased the mill in 1983, and thus began her journey to save the designs.  She has won many awards for her work and written quite a few knitting books.

The Highlands and abode of Nessie

This was one of the last stops on our voyage.   I decided to forgo the trip to see the Loch Ness  Monster and explore this shipbuilding and key Naval location during the second world war.   We walked around the town, visited the museum and lunched at a local coffee shop.   This was the only place that accepted money in pounds (English and Irish),  euros and even krone's,  so a shopping I did do.  The local bank was in a Subway Sandwich Shop!!!!!

Edinbourgh Scotland

The ship docked in South Queensferry, a lovely spot outside Edinburgh.   I didn't plan anything for this port. We had no prearranged excursions and although there are yarn shops in this city, I was so full of yarn, "Yes I said that" and a bit tired.   I decided to be a typical tourist and take a ship planned excursion into Edinburgh and I'm so glad I did.   I had no clue, it is such an amazing city.  The architecture was breathtaking, there is so much history there.  Ancient history, centuries old history.   Kathy and Lynn were on the bus with me.  We visited Princes Street, a major shopping road, beginning at the bottom of the Edinburgh Castle, flowing out to Hollyroodhouse Castle, the Queen's residence while in Scotland.  I would love to visit here again.   Do museums and pubs and shop and go to a yarn shop..well, another time.

As we traveled the Irish Sea toward Scotland we attended great classes. JC Briar is a wonderful, creative and super smart instructor.   We had classes in reading lace patterns,  cables, Brioche and shawl design.   So many things to think about and skills to learn or improve.   If you ever get the opportunity to take one (or more) of her classes, I would highly recommend it..she is brilliant in so many ways.   I know she does Stitches Events https://www.knittinguniverse.com/stitches/ and teaches at Black Sheep in Oregon.
